12/21/2004: "I Don't Know My Country Music."
This is country singer Penny Dale...
I don't know much about the country music scene, so I have no idea if Penny has had any success since I shot this a couple years ago. The color shots on her site were shot the same day. This is one of those instances when someone shows up with a bunch of pictures that they have torn out of magazines to show you what they want. In this case, Penny brought pictures of Shania Twain and asked "Can you make my pictures look like this?" (I'm paraphrasing there) She was very sweet and I know she didn't mean that she wanted to look like Shania exactly, but expecting to see film that looks like retouched images of a very beautiful celebrity is the first clue that there might be trouble ahead. As I kinda expected, Penny wasn't too excited about the film when she first saw it. I told her to hold any judgments until the retouching was done. A few weeks later she called to tell me how much she loved the pictures. Whew! Thanks Penny. All's well that ends well.
camera/film: Horseman 4x5, 210mm. Polaroid Type 55 P/N film. lighting: One Speedotron head in a Chimera medium soft box. The box is angled so that it lights falls onto the left side of the background. One light! Simple!

I guess I should have explained this was my first professional photo shoot! I was at the VERY beginning of my career and needed some pictures. A mutual friend recommended Brooks, and yes I was clueless on what to expect! Brooks and the makeup artist were great. I have used and really like several of the shots. If you don't know country music or myself, hopefully you will very soon. If you do know country music, you've never heard anything like this. My first album will be out soon, check out pennydale.com for info

Wow! Thanks Penny. You don't have to explain yourself. People bring pictures to me all the time and it has nothing to do with how many times they've been on a professional photo shoot. Many times it's very helpful, but I can tell when it might be an issue with expectations. It usually works out in the end though. Good luck with the CD. Get huge so I can tell everyone that I knew you when. :-)
