02/14/2005: "Happy V Day"

NPvalentinecover (75k image)

Well, if you care about such things anyway...

My wife and I aren't going to go out and suffer through crowds at a restaurant tonight. We'll stay inside and be in love like we are every other day of the year. If you are expected to celebrate tonight, make a homemade card. It has always worked for me.

model: Adrienne Janic (Ford Models)
makeup: Randi Mavestrand
nails: Daniel Glasco
styling: Karie L. Frost
retouching: Daniel Freguson

camera/film: Hasselblad ELM, 150mm. Fuji Astia 100F
lighting: Two Speedotron heads on each side with Xenophone Diffusers. The main light is a Speedotron head with an 11" reflector and a 10º grid spot directly above the camera lens.

The fingernails are a nice touch. When you go on photo shoots, do you coordinate the scenery, cosmetics, etc., or do other people do that?

This was a Nailpro magazine story about the technique used on those nails (hole punching). It was also the February issue in 2004.

The answer to the question is always different. Stuff like this is always a collaboration between the creative department at the magazine and me on the day of the shoot. Although the concept for this shot was already well thought out, I added my opinions on makeup, lighting, background and a bit on the positioning of the hands and fingers to best illustrate the idea. It's a little hard to see the glitter on her body and hands in a small shot on the computer, but that was something that made the shot pop on the cover.
