01/10/2005: "Portrait Of An Illustrator (part 2)"

Brian Swanson, Illustrator and Observationalist...

This is what happens when you come over to my studio and we get bored. I eventually take out a camera and some Polaroid film and shoot a few frames. I was building this metal basket for another photographer to use in his dry ice machine and the basket had been sitting on a shelf when we decided to pull it down and put it on Brian's head. I mean, what else would we do. Right?

camera/film: Horseman LX 4x5, 210mm. Polaroid Type 59. For those who don't know, the strange plane of focus on this shot (you may have seen it elsewhere) is due to a unique feature of view cameras called swings and tilts. This was shot with the front lens board tilted way down (forward) so that it's not parallel with the film plane. If you want to get really technical, it's based on the Scheimflug Rule. What I did in this shot is actually using the rule in the exact opposite fashion that it was intended.
lighting: One 1K (1000 watt) LTM Pepper. That's it.

It's nice to see that Johnny Biscuit is still lurking the Interweb after discontinuing his blog. Welcome Johnny!

A good technique lesson. The subject looks a bit like the young Pete Townshend.

I've always thought that he looks a little like the late Herb Ritts in this picture.

Love it. When I get bored I just make scary stuff that I could never show my children!
