12/06/2004: "As Promised."

halston08 (51k image)

As promised here's my "pandering to the female vote" post. This is Rodger Halston.
grooming: Yolanda Halston

This is one of the shots that has become synonymous with my color portrait work. It was shot with a Hasselblad (those in the know already know that because of those two little notches on the left side of the frame) and my long time favorite portrait lens the 150mm.
These days, Rodger and his wife Yolanda are the folks behind Classified Cosmetics. That's spray on foundation for you ladies. When this picture was taken Rodger was acting, and if you have kids, you may have seen him in a couple of those Casper movies or Adams Family Reunion. Anyway, this was done for a magazine that I won't mention because they suck.

camera/film: Hasselblad, 150mm, Fuji Provia 100
lighting: Two Speedotron strobe heads, one mainlight with 20" reflector and Roscosun 1/4 CTO warming gel. One backlight with 12" reflector and 1/4 CTB "quarter blue" gel. Although it's subtle, I like the opposite colors balanced against each other in dark relatively dark shots like this one. This is a technique I used to use a lot with Fuji Provia 100. I haven't done anything like this digitally yet, but I'm assuming I would only gel the backlight with a little deeper blue and white balance the mainlight a little on the warm side.
Edited to add some lighting info per Lorelei's request. I'll try to add as much of this info as I can remember on the posts in the future.

Nice! (And thanks; consider yourself pandered (?)) He has on a few too many clothes, as compared with the prior hot chick shot, but that's okay. :-)

Brooks,

What? Nothing happened to the guy after you made this shot? You know, like the football player, who's life went to hades in a basket after shooting him! smile
Personally, I think you have pandered quite enough for the female vote. If you really wanted to do so - think about it - you would post a shot of yourself!!! That's the ultimate in pandering isn't it?

such delicious and beautiful work. for those of us aspiring, i wonder if you would ever consider doing a side-note to your pictures describing what your lighting set-up is for each image?

I'll try to post some men with less clothes soon Maura. :-)

Thanks HunnyB!

Come to think of it Wes, I don't think he did any more acting after this shoot, so you might be right.

Lorelei, I hope the added lighting info is helpful even though it's not to detailed.

It's beautiful in that I admire your work.

But I don't think he's hot, because he looks like he really thinks he is. You know?
