08/25/2004: "What's in a Name?"

A post over at Write On Megs and the comments attached reminded me of something I forgot to add to my random thoughts below. While we were eating a wonderful meal at Wendy's I overheard the mom at the table next to us call her little girl Lexus. My first thought was, "Wow! Now when she grows up, she won't have to change her name when she goes into porn."

did you ever see that one south park with the kiddy hooters girls? and they were all named like, lexus and mercedes? oh man. totally funny.

Sort of along the same wavelength, I recently saw on "20/20" a clip about African Americans being discouraged naming their kids after brands or too "ethnic." According to the program, there is a less likely chance they would get a job if they were up against a person with a more "white" sounding name. Interesting/sad.

yes, i had the hardest time finding a job...

From someone that was made fun of a lot because of my name. I have sympathy for those kids that have to suffer through life with horrible names. My name ended up being one that people like, but it was a long hard road when I was a kid. Be kind to your kids folks. They won't understand that you were just trying to make them unique until it's too late.

BWAHAHA!

Oh, and I named my kid Kiernan. I intended to toughen him up for the real world -- all of the future beatings, you know... though, it's a hard thing when his new teachers each year expect him to be a girl.

Oh, and thanks so much for the link! Hooray!

Katie said @ 08/25/2004 06:47 PM PST

Kiernan is borderline. It's one of those names, like mine, that the girls will eventually warm up to. It's unique without being embarrassing. It's also not made up. Made up names can be good, but most people aren't creative enough to come up with good ones. This leads to common names with the "wrong" spelling or commonly spelled names with the "wrong" pronunciation, two more of my big pet peeves.

a friend of mine had a student named "Aquanetta".
oy.

in the last ten years, Brian and I call it the "scrabble approach" - since it seems that people (who may have a scrabble game), just toss the letters into the air and whatever lands is what they name their kid

dar said @ 08/26/2004 09:53 AM PST

yea, like "lemonjello" pronounced "luh mahn juh low"

I had a student once named Holly Krapp. then, the next semester, I had one named Anya Butt. I do not lie.

In Jr. High I had two friends that often hung out together. One girl named Diah and another named Ria. I'm 40 and I still get a chuckle.

Brooks said @ 08/26/2004 11:05 AM PST

oh man, brian. my friend in high school.. her mom was a doctor.. and she had twin patients named lemonjello and orangello (or-rahnj-ello) oh man! awesome.

sar said @ 08/26/2004 01:04 PM PST

In the spirit of Aquanetta, Lemonjello and Orangejello, I had to share one more thing. In junior high, I knew a girl named Vrolet, as in Chevrolet. God, I love America.

without giving away my real name, i'll tell you it rhymes with "harry tinkle."

the teasing haunts me to this day.

copygodd said @ 08/26/2004 09:31 PM PST

copygodd said @ 08/26/2004 09:33 PM PST

I deleted the double posts, but left your last comment "Harry" because It make me laugh a little.
